Long distance relationships are notoriously fraught with issues, to the point of being a punchline. While the modernization of communication allows for more options for keeping in touch, no amount of emails can make up for a lack of physical intimacy. Despite the obstacles, you shouldn’t be discouraged. Studies have found that the quality of a relationship doesn’t differ significantly based on geographical location, but it will take more work. Here are some tips we recommend you take into consideration before embarking on your long distance relationship journey.
1 – Have a Plan
Start by asking yourself why your relationship is long distance. Did it start that way maybe via online dating? Do you or your partner need to move for personal or work related reasons? Is this situation temporary or does it have no foreseeable end date? The answers to these questions will determine your plan moving forward and help make sure you are both on the same page.
2 – Schedule Your Time
Different work schedules, time zones and sleep preferences can cause real issues when dating long distance. It is important to create couple time that works for both of you and that you can rely on regularly. Don’t fall into the habit of missing calls or video chats because it isn’t convenient, instead schedule time together for when you both feel able to enjoy it.
3 – Visits
Obviously in a long distance relationship, if it lasts long enough, you will want to meet in person. If you met online, make sure that you are sure of who you are meeting and keep your safety as your number one priority. If you already know your partner, plan well but leave time for spontaneity. The longer you are apart the more pressure you can feel when you finally see your partner again, this is normal and can lead to awkwardness. Take the pressure off and just enjoy your time together.
